About this service

Straight answers. Before you book.

Moving away from a gas cooktop? A licensed gasfitter disconnects the old unit, takes it away, caps the gas point and leak tests the capped line. Book gas cooktop cap-off across most of Sydney metro and arrange any electrical work separately.

Questions about gas cooktop cap-off

What is included in the gas cap-off service?

The old gas cooktop is disconnected and taken away. The gas point is capped, sealed and leak tested before we finish.

Does gas cap-off include connecting a new induction cooktop?

A new hardwired cooktop needs an electrician for its electrical connection. If your new model can plug into a suitable existing outlet and you want us to fit it, choose cooktop installation so the job includes fitting that replacement.

When does an electrician need to disconnect the old cooktop?

If the old cooktop is hardwired, the electrician needs to disconnect it before our visit. Send us a photo if you are unsure, so we can help you arrange the work in the right order.

Gas cooktop disconnection and cap-off

You have decided to move away from gas. Before anything else can happen, the old cooktop has to come out and that gas point has to be capped off properly — sealed and left safe and compliant, not simply turned off at the isolation valve and forgotten behind a new appliance.

That is licensed gasfitting work. It is also the one part most electricians will not touch, which is why people get stuck halfway through this job.

What happens next

Once the gas is capped, your new cooktop goes in. Which of us does that depends on the cooktop:

  • If it plugs into an existing outlet, we can fit it on the same visit — order cooktop installation instead of this, since that covers both halves in one price.
  • If it is hardwired into its own circuit, an electrician makes that connection after we have capped the gas. Ask if you need a name — they bill you directly and we take nothing from it. One exception on timing: if your old cooktop is hardwired too, they need to disconnect it before our visit rather than after.

Not sure which yours is? Look at the cable on the new cooktop. We can fit models supplied ready to plug into a suitable existing outlet, subject to the manufacturer’s requirements. Bare wires or a fixed connection block means an electrician finishes it. Send us the make and model if you would rather we checked.

What this price does not cover

  • Fitting the new cooktop. This is the disconnection and cap-off only — if you want both, order the full installation instead.
  • Electrical work of any kind, including disconnecting an old cooktop that is hardwired rather than plugged in. Most have a normal plug we simply unplug. If yours is hardwired, your electrician needs to disconnect it before we arrive, not after — otherwise we cannot lift it out. Send a photo if you are unsure and we will tell you which way round it goes.
  • Removing or capping gas anywhere other than the cooktop point.
  • Making good the benchtop or cabinetry where the old cooktop sat.
  • Putting right existing gas work we find to be non-compliant. We explain it and the cost before touching anything.

How it works

  1. Order this and pick your day and arrival window at checkout.
  2. We disconnect the cooktop, cap the gas point and leak test it.
  3. We take the old cooktop away with us.
  4. Your electrician fits the new one whenever suits you.

We will need access to the gas isolation point.

Why it has to be a licensed gasfitterNSW gas safety rules

In New South Wales, gas work must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, and a poor connection is a safety risk, not just a leak.
